![]() D A PENNEBAKER and CHRIS HEGEDUS form one of the most respected and unique teams of documentary filmmakers working today. Known for their unobtrusive, fly-on-the-wall style of filmmaking, they do not direct, nor interview for information. Using handheld cameras and available light allows them to observe without interrupting. They prefer that the protagonist determine what will happen, not the filmmaker. The result is a candid portrait of real characters in action and confrontation. The team received the D.W. Griffith Award for Best Documentary of the Year and an Academy Award nomination for their 1994 film THE WAR ROOM, which followed Bill Clinton’s first presidential campaign. Their most recent film, co-directed by Nick Doob and produced for HBO, ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations including Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Program. Pennebaker, Hegedus, and Doob are currently in production on a film about political satirist Al Franken. |
